From touchdown to date night: why one hour is not enough

A client recently emailed to say that his flight would land at Schiphol at noon, so his booking could begin at 13.00, an hour later. It sounds perfectly reasonable...  at least in theory. The aircraft lands, the passenger steps outside, travels to Amsterdam and checks into the hotel. What could possibly take more than an hour? Quite a lot, as it turns out. 

This particular client is far from alone. We regularly receive proposed schedules that leave barely an hour between landing at Schiphol and the start of a date in Amsterdam. Other clients forget to mention their arrival time altogether. Then, half an hour before the booking, the telephone rings: the aircraft parked at a distant gate, passport control took longer than expected, the suitcase is nowhere to be seen or Amsterdam traffic has decided not to cooperate. The carefully planned evening suddenly begins with stress, rushed phonecalls and repeated glances at the clock. That is hardly the atmosphere anyone had in mind.

In short: allow for the journey, allow for the unexpected and allow the evening to begin properly. The purpose of a romantic booking is to escape the clock, not to race against it.

Landing time is not the same as arrival time 

A flight landing at noon does not mean that its passengers are standing in Schiphol Arrivals at noon. First, the aircraft must taxi to its gate. Passengers then have to disembark and walk through the terminal. Depending on the origin of the flight, there may be passport or border formalities. Anyone travelling with checked baggage must continue to the baggage hall and wait for the carousel to perform its slow, suspenseful ritual.

After collecting the luggage, passengers pass through customs. Most simply follow the green “Nothing to declare” signs. Others may need to declare goods, collect odd-size baggage or answer a few questions. Occasionally, someone is selected for an additional check. Only after all this does the journey to Amsterdam begin.

A train ride to Amsterdam Centraal may take less than twenty minutes, but that does not include waiting for the train, travelling from Amsterdam Centraal to the hotel or discovering that the hotel is nowhere near Amsterdam Centraal. A taxi removes some of those steps, but it cannot remove traffic. Not to mention the waiting times for rides booked through taxi apps such as Uber and Bolt. But at least you don't have to worry about being scammed by the so-called 'Amsterdam taxi maffia', who welcome you with open arms at arrivals.

“But in theory, it could be faster”

Absolutely. With only carry-on luggage, a nearby arrival gate and no delays at passport control or customs, the airport can be navigated surprisingly quickly. A chauffeur waiting in the arrivals hall can save additional time. A hotel near Schiphol rather than in central Amsterdam changes the calculation considerably. Perhaps the reception desk is quiet, the room is ready and check-in takes only a few minutes. Perhaps freshening up requires ten minutes rather than thirty.

Every connection may line up perfectly. All of that can happen. It is simply unwise to build an entire evening around the assumption that every single part of the journey will run at maximum efficiency. Schiphol, airline operations, Dutch railways, Amsterdam traffic and hotel reception desks have not entered into a secret agreement to protect a romantic schedule. The fastest theoretically possible itinerary is not the same as a comfortable or realistic one.

Why a little margin improves the entire evening

The purpose of adding extra time is not to encourage clients to spend hours waiting in a hotel room. It is to prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a crisis. With a sensible margin, a delayed suitcase is merely annoying. Without one, it threatens the booking. A short queue at reception becomes irrelevant rather than infuriating. There is time to shower, change clothes, have something to eat and arrive at the date feeling composed. That final point matters.

A luxury date should not begin with a client rushing through the hotel lobby while attempting to send three messages, locate the room key and remove an aircraft pillow mark from his face. For most arrivals, a realistic planning framework is:

Additional time may be needed for odd-size baggage, goods that must be declared, an additional customs check or a particularly ambitious freshening-up routine. Couples often need closer to an hour to shower, change and prepare. A client who still wishes to collect drinks, snacks, flowers, candles or a small gift in Amsterdam should also allow another thirty to sixty minutes. Romance benefits from preparation; it rarely benefits from sprinting through a department store five minutes before a booking.

Preparation happens on both sides

It is also worth remembering that the escort is not waiting in suspended animation until the agreed starting time.
